Charcoal on paper 1988 shown at The Women’s Gallery, Brunswick St.
“City Soul” describes the angst and melancholy that living in a big city can cause; the loneliness that the city-dweller can experience. In each small room an isolated figure sits on a chair in front of a single bed, the window has a cross bar against the light that symbolises a spiritual cross of protection. Outside are the street and the house in Vardens Rd. Clapham Junction, London where the artist lived prior to her marriage to Jeremy Robert Nelson. The figures in the drawing eventually inspire the “Eye Am” series of artworks by Stimson.
