 “FIGURE-TREE- RIVER CROSS”

1990 Charcoal on paper

This work was inspired by the writings of Spinoza who declared that as God was infinite and the universe was infinite that the two Creators must be one and the same.  The cross is an ancient spiritual symbol, as is the moon. This chalk and charcoal drawing is one of several attempts by the artist to show the spiritual link between mankind and Nature. Man is represented as both the vertical of the cross (the tree) and the river of life (The Holy life-giving waters) as the horizontal.  The roots of the tree go deep in the earth, the branches reach up to the heavens.  The background shoreline is that of St. Kilda, Melbourne
